“The land covered by Iran’s natural flora is four times that of the Europe’s”

Among 375,000 plant species around the world, more than 10000 grow on Iran’s wide diverse geographical features this richness in flora is due to the diverse climatic and soil conditions in different ecological regions that create incredible scenery by your dreams …

Range from the richest medicinal herbs on the slops of mountain areas, luxuriant deciduous forests near the Caspian through oak, pistachio and almond woodlands in the central highlands to acacia woodlands, fan-palms and mangrove swamps in the south.

According to FAO reports, the major types of forests that exist in Iran and their respective areas are:

1. Caspian forests of the northern districts (33,000 km²)
2. Limestone mountainous forests in the northeastern districts (Juniper us forests, 13,000 km²)
3. Pistachio forests in the eastern, southern and southeastern districts (26,000 km²)
4. Oak forests in the central and western districts (100,000 km²)
5. Shrubs of the Kavir (desert) districts in the central and northeastern part of the country (10,000 km²)
6. Sub-tropical forests of the southern coast (5,000 km²) like the Hara forests.

One-third of Iran's total surface area is suited for farmland & Agriculture has a long history and tradition in Iran. As early as 10,000 BC, the earliest known domestication of the goat had taken place in the Iranian plateau.

The earliest technology of watering like invention of The Windmill (1700 bc) founded in Persia for the first time in history & The Qanat, a subterranean aqueduct used for irrigation in agriculture, was one of the most significant and successful achievements of the Persian tradition. Qanats were in use millennia ago, and are still in use in contemporary Iran.

As you know, unique and value-added of Native Crops can be realized by farming with native plant species that were traditionally used by First Nations as food sources. Notably, among the flora of Middle East, there are many plant species of global food importance, which have their center of diversity in the region. These include wheat, barley, oilseed rape and chickpea that constitute almost 38% of the world dry matter in food production & Iran have the highest plant diversity in the region (FAO, 1998b and World Conservation and Monitoring Center, 1999).
